Leeds trio Sky Larkin manage to combine some fresh sounding guitar led melodies on this debut release for the Wichita label.
It’s certainly not your usual verse/chorus/verse scenario with this lot – they seem to treat each song as a mini movement, with each song moving through various moods.
They’ve got catchy melodies in each tune and a raft of tasty guitar riffs to accompany them.
“Still Windmills” starts off with an arty-rock blast of guitar noise before the vocal come in. “Tiny Heist” starts off deceptively slow, before pounding drums and chiming guitars emerge, not just a little bit like nineties indie guitar heroines Throwing Muses.
“Spooktacular” has plenty of fast guitars and jerky rhythms, but these are all underpinned by great vocal melodies, whereas “Year Dot” has more of an electronica vibe to it.
It may take a few listens to get your head around their rollercoaster approach to songwriting, with its multiple twists and turns – but it’s a journey that’s well worth the effort.
